Wordpress Upgrade 1.5 to 2.0.5

November 20th, 2006

I have upgraded The Land of Ozz blog to the latest and greatest version of Word Press. It was fairly painless process, but it did take a little longer that I expected.  The upgrade did require some manual edits of the page templates to get everything back to the way it was before the upgrade.  I still have a few tweaks to make, but those are not related to the upgrade.

Lessons Learned:

  1. I need to back up the MYSQL database and files structure for my blogs a little more often.
  2. Don’t start an upgrade two hours before your scheduled bedtimeLessonso

The first lesson was more of a reminder.  A good backup can aid in moving to another hosting provider when needed and can save your rear end if your provider has a server crash only to find that their backups are no good.
The second point was definitely a lesson.  I started the upgrade process at about 9PM.  The first hour and a half was spent preparing for the upgrade. (i.e., back ups, disabling plug-ins, making notes, etc.) process.  The actual upgrade of WordPress took less than a minute.  So if you have a blog without any plug-ins and template modifications then you could be upgraded in minutes with a recent backup in hand.  It does take a few minutes to download the newest version, modify the configuration files, and then transfer the package to your server.  The post upgrade editing time depends on how much you have modified your blog since it was installed.
