Is Windows Vista for Dummies?

October 22nd, 2007

Today’s message from DVD host Omar Wasow is titled “Windows Vista IS for Dummies, buy a MAC if you really want to get some work done.”

Fox News ran a short segment today titled Picking a PC. The guest of the segment was Omar Wasow whose claim to fame comes from being the host of the Windows Vista for Dummies DVD. Wasow also credits himself with teaching Oprah Winfrey how to use email according to this news story.

The Fox News hosts along with their guest (Mr. Windows Vista for Dummies) actually give MAC the big endorsement. The most interesting part of this HOWTO pick a PC story is that when Wasow is asked which machine he uses, his answer leads him to admit that he is a MAC user. He does slip in there that he uses Windows too, but his reaction shows a clear preference for the MAC “Road Warrior ” machine. The Dell laptop shown in the clip gets the worst press of all as being the cheap choice for the college kid.

I’ve been a Mac fan since they switched to OS X.. with its Unix underpinnings, it’s the perfect platform for a tech guy like me.

Interestingly enough, I have seen quite a few Windows tech support folks carrying MacBooks and iBooks – makes complete sense, because they are immune to Windows viri and can run all flavors of Windows under emulation as well as Linux, BSD, etc..

I wrote a post about that recently; easy to find at my site if you want.

Recently I changed my email footer to include this line:

“Have you bought a Mac yet? Why not?”

    :-)

Thanks for visiting HOEI.com. I have not made the jump to a Mac, but I do plan to at some point. I am currently working on a 2 Ghz Pentium laptop with 1GB of RAM that I bought from a previous employer who was cycling out older laptops that were out of warranty. I paid $100 for it. I run Windows XP Pro (license came with it). I also run VMWare so that I can have access to a copy of Fedora. This is my personal laptop. I also have an older PC on my home network that runs Open VPN so that I can encrypt my traffic back to my home network when on Open Wireless LANs during travel.

I am assigned a laptop by my current employer that is a high performing Windows XP box. I don’t get a choice to receive a MAC at work.

With all that said, the Macs will need to come way down in price before they are going to appeal to me when I shop for a new personal computer.
