Milly and Mama,

I think you guys have nailed it. The key factor in raising successful kids is for the parent to be the primary influence on the kids. You can only get this by being involved. Homeschooling is simply a way to maximize the amount of involvement over other influences in you kid's lives. The same success can certainly be reached with other education methods, it just takes effort on the part of the parents. The higher the level of outside influences can cause more work in training in areas of ethics and morals depending on how aligned those other influence are with your family's values.

INVOLVED parent!

true dat!

Research shows it. I heard a lecture on those parents that are involved with the school, teachers, and the kids show higher test scores and are less likely to have problems. I knew all of my son’s teachers in grade school and my daughter’s teacher in her school. I have spent several hours on the phone with my son’s math teacher at the end of the school year just to be sure he was doing ok and should move on. I’ve met some bad home school parents and some great ones same goes with public school being involved is key.

I think it's because the children get one on one with a parent for almost 100% of the instruction time. They spend time on very relavent tasks and when a child "gets" something, the parent can move on to the next lesson. In a school setting, they can NOT.
Jeff said: "I think that parent negligence is the number one crime against kids. It leads to almost ALL other tragic things that happen to them."
Hank - we need a "nodding head" icon. I think all you can say to that statement is you're absolutely right! I think if you talked to public school teachers and found out which parents were truly INVOLVED with their children, and then compared those ACT scores, you would find those would be much higher than average also. We are really struggling with what is best for our family - home school, private school, public school.... I think the most IMPORTANT part is to be an INVOLVED parent!

I wonder why that is. Do you think it is because those who homeschool are the type of parents that are extremely involved in their kids education? I think that parent negligence is the number one crime against kids. It leads to almost ALL other tragic things that happen to them.

My son scored higher then a guy I know who took it in highschool. In fact at the award ceremony they pointed out that most of the kids out scored most of the people now in college. I will say that some of the kids were home schooled. My boy starts eighth grade this year and will be taking geometry because he’s ahead of his grade in math. You can’t judge all school districts the same some move you up as you progress. I know that I would be a bad home school mom. I’m glad you and your wife are up to the challenge. I’m also glad that God put us in this school district.
