Huckabee or Thompson

“I hope my friends will follow my lead and vote for Senator Fred Thompson when the polls open in 2008.”

Those were my words, but I am not sure I will be sticking to them. I wrote that at the end of a blog post on November 24th. Then I saw the debate and really liked what I saw from Huckabee and not so much what I saw from Thompson. Just call it a flip-flop if I pull in behind Huckabee. That’s fine with me because I am not running for office. Right now I am firmly on the fence. One of the questions that I had considered for asking Thompson if I had a chance was, “who would you vote for if you were not running and why?” I would like to ask Huckabee the same one and a few others.

I am confident that either Fred Thompson or Mike Huckabee will win the South Carolina Republican primary this coming January regardless of what the polls say. Out of all the front runners, these two most closely represent the southern conservative point of view in my opinion. I am pleased to see Huckabee gaining ground on the more liberal Republican contenders. Fred Thompson, definitely not a liberal contender, has been my favorite until recently mainly due to my belief that Thompson is more electable candidate. However, I value my Christian friends’ opinions and have looked closely at Huckabee as a result of some of them leaning in Huckabee’s direction. I am now much more on the fence during this primary election than I have ever been for any election. I am also more knowledgeable about the candidates at an earlier point than I have ever been.

One thing is for certain. I am not going to agree with any single candidate on all of the issues. None of them is a clone of me. ;-) I do believe that strong family values and a solid commitment to maintaining the security of this country are the most important issues at stake.

Fred is by far the better conservative.

This site should help you in your decision making process for when that time comes.

Huckabee will get shredded if he happens to win the nomination. The MSM sees him as an easy target for Hillary or Obama to beat. Conservatives are being told they have to settle for someone like Huckabee, Romney or Giuliani. If you want to settle for “the lesser of two evils”, then fine. You do that. I’m sticking with my man Fred Thompson. No fence riding here. We’re electing a candidate for POTUS, not a Pastor.

People are tired of the government telling them how to live their lives. Not to mention, they’re tired of being told we need to accept people who break our laws, while our own citizens get spit on. Huckabee is horrendous on taxes and immigration reform. For those reasons alone, he should not be President. At least not a Republican President.

Huckno, Thanks for the link. I found one thing on that site that helps my personal case for Huckabee. On immigration, I am not convinced that illegals can be forced out of this country by putting pressure on the employers the way Huckabee and Thompson suggest. I think that is likely to increase crime rates instead. I beleive in a path to citizenship for illegals that comes with some consequences.

    Renee,

I am not settling for the lesser of two evils by a long shot. As stated above, Thompson is no better on immigration than Huckabee from MY perspective. Romney and Giuliani could just have easily run on the Democratic ticket. Faith and helath are two big concerns I have when it comes to Fred. Huckabee, well I wish he could be as strong in his faithg without having been a pastor. I want a man in office who beleives AND trusts in God to guide his life and our country on a daily basis. Huckabee is light years ahead of the pack on that subject. I just hope he can make that clear without freaking out the naysayers in this subject.

But isn’t Ron Paul the only true-blue conservative (of the Barry Goldwater variety - Barry Goldwater’s son has endorsed him) running on the Republican side?

I don’t understand how you could be against someone who has a Congressional voting record of only voting based on what the Constitution allows for? This seems like a no-brainer to me…

    PA,

I am not at all impressed with Ron Paul’s anti IRAQ stance. His “I told you so” message about IRAQ in grating on my nerves. I was fine with going to IRAQ and I want the US troops to stay until the job gets done. For em, that point alone is big enough for me to look elsewhere.

I supported the war as well, and voted for Bush twice.

But, I changed my mind after I read this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0976344807/

    PA,

I am sure we could pass references all day on the rights and wrongs of this war or any other. I could easily argue the point either way if I was asked to debate it.

BTW…Is there a particular reason why you choose not to identify yourself with a name?

I too have leaned more towards the Huckster…

    I like Mike…
