Tech Land on WordPress 2.0.1

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

The Tech Land of Ozz is being migrated from Blogger to WordPress 2.0.1. The problems with Blogger trying to publish using ftp to personal domains continue to hinder blogging. Here is a copy of the error that I have been getting when trying to publish my Blogger posts using ftp:

001 java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out/index.html

The Tech Land of Ozz will be where I post pure technical stuff in the future. I may cross post some things over here, but I plan to build that blog as a separate technical blog.

Open Post Monday - WayBackMachine

Monday, February 13th, 2006

The WayBackMachine Internet Archive is way cool. It is great for a laugh or too drudge up some views of the days of old. I even laughed at my own sites in this archive. Below are a few notables that you might find interesting. I think that Drudge Report has got to be the least changed web site format that I pulled up. Below shows the Drudge Report site back on December 6, 1998 as a sample of what you will see over at WayBackMachine.com.

Drudge Report Archive

Other notables that you can click to see their archive listings led me to find that La Shawn Barber and Glenn Reynolds were once Blogger users. The Instapundit seems to have held his own for the longest. The Michelle Malkin archive of 3/1/00 led me to a story at the Jewish World Review. Below is the first paragraph from that story.

“WHERE HAVE ALL the churches gone? From Oregon to Florida, houses of worship are getting zoned out of their neighborhoods by government regulators who put high-priced sod above G-d.”

I wonder why she could not spell out God?

The Land of Ozz has Evolved

Monday, February 6th, 2006

I logged on today to check for comments and trackbacks that needed moderating. Much to my surprise I found that The Land of Ozz had evolved The Land of Ozz is a Large Mammalinto a “Large Mammal” on the TTLB Ecosystem . The current Technorati Ranking for The Land of Ozz is at 8,446 (338 links from 164 sites). That puts The Land of Ozz in the top .03% of the 27 million blogs that Technorati is currently tracking and in the top .3% of the 2.7 million blogs that are updated at least weekly. Not bad given the fact that this little blog has been alive less than one year.

The traffic to this blog is increasing by more than 22% per month. I attribute that to several things, but the main one is that I update this blog regularly.

This is a pretty big day for me and for God. My recent blogging (since the beginning of the year) has consisted of 17 out of 49 posts being categorized as Faith and/or Godcast. That is a higher percentage of faith related posts than my overall historical blog statistics. The broad statistics of The Land of Ozz shows less than 50 posts out of 187 categorized as faith and/or Godcast. I believe I am headed in the right direction with this blog.

I want to thank my regular visitors most of all for the recent success of this blog. I especially what to thank those who purchase from the vendor links found in the sidebar and ion posts. I am just about breaking even on the technical cost of the HOEI.com domain as a result of the affiliate links found on this and other pages on HOEI.com I also want to thank those other bloggers who continue to bring me traffic. Please browse my sidebar of my main blog page and visit some of these other blogs listed.

Google Business Decision

Sunday, February 5th, 2006

I continue to be amazed by the number of people who are getting bent out of shape over Google’s handling of search services in China. Let’s consider a few simple questions related to the criticism of Google on the subject of search engine censorship.

1. How do people in China search?

Most of the bloggers and media doing the criticizing probably have no clue how the average Chinese user searches or which Google site they use to search. Do folks in China use Chinese characters on Google.com or do they use English characters on Google.cn. There are a lot of assumptions packed into most of the analysis of the Google China story. I do not claim to have any better information than anyone else, but at least I am passing judgment on Google based on partial truths.

2. How do other search engines stack up?

Have you looked to see how Yahoo.cn stacks up against Yahoo.com? It’s about the same as Google if not worse on some searches. I know they have different philosophies and how they get search results, but why does a search for Jesus Christ from Yahoo.cn only get 149,000 results where the same search on Yahoo.com gets 72,000,000? (Disclaimer: I am an American with no clue how a person in China would search or which engine they would use. See point #1)

3. Did anyone read the Google statement on this issue?

Here is my favorite part:

…the launch of Google.cn did not in any way alter the availability of the uncensored Chinese-language version of Google.com, which Google provides globally to all Internet users without restriction.

What if Chinese folks use the same search engine we do, but with their own language? See point #1.

Can anyone point me to a source on this subject who actually knows how and where an average Chinese person searches for information on the Internet?

Goggle Google China Censorship

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

The story I did last Sunday on Google’s censoring of its Chinese search engine site has been linked in La Shawn Barber’s post titled Friday’s Blogospheric Conditions. My story on this subject called attention to the JunkYard Blog for falling into a MSM style slant by reporting partial truths. The JunkYard Blog seemed to just bypass the fact that the main Google search engine in China produces more results on religious terms like “Jesus Christ” and “Christian” than does the main Google.com search engine. The JunkYard Blog focused on the images.google.cn site which does show a bias against Christian related searches.

The JunkYard Blog never acknowledged my challenge of their story, but they did an update with a link found on the Instapundit pointing to Paul Boultin’s post on how misspelling of Tiananmen will generate very different results. What’s the correct spelling of that place in English anyway?

I have read how misspellings can be used to your advantage on eBay in Marsha Collier’s book eBay Business All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies . You can capture a fairly captive audience of potential buyer or none at all when you advertise a product with a misspelling. Some buyers might misspell or mistype in a search for a product on eBay that you are selling and you could be the only one selling it with that spelling. On the other hand, you might miss the majority of potential buyers by misspelling something. It’s worth researching before you create your eBay listing.

I have witnessed first-hand how a misspelling can generate search engine traffic to a blog. With my sloppy grammar and spelling I accidentally misspelled Goggle Earth as Goggle Earth in a post on The Tech Land of Ozz back in August 2005. I still get a large number of hits on searches for “Goggle Earth” and on images.google.com because the image name in that post was also misspelled as goggleearth.jpg. Now I will get a ton more search engine hits because I just misspelling Google a few more times.

Treo vs Blackberry - Part II

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

A CNN story says BlackBerry shutdown worries feds. I currently pop (using SSL) three different mail servers including one .mil address using my Treo 650. I love it. I don’t hear the same reports from those who use a Blackberry.

Previous post on Treo vs Blackberry

Now with that said, a link posted over at the Pocket PC Thoughts forum titled Palm, Inc. to be Sold? came into my feed this morning. It linked to a Reuters story. What could that mean for us Treo Palm OS faithfuls?

GO PIX

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

Root Canal

This is a new experimental photo blog of mine and you are looking at the first post. I try other blogging platforms regularly to see what features are being offered in the blogging world. Here I have joined BlogCharm and created a photoblog called GO PIX.

GO PIX is to be a blog of photos taken by ANYONE on the go. I expect most photos to come from camera phones or PDAs, but all photos are welcome. They can be of funny stuff or weird stuff. The pictures must be clean! That means that I will not post even partial nudity or generally gross stuff according to my own standards.

You are encouraged to send any pictures you would like posted to GOPIX [at] hoei.com with a short caption unless you want me to make one up. I would also like to know what device you took the picture with (i.e., Treo 650, Motorola RAZR Vc3, etc.).

Am I a Disgruntled and Begrudging Blogger?

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

This posts is in response to La Shawn Barber’s questions on her blog this morning. She asks the following questions shown in italics. My responses to those questions are in bold. You can read more responses to these questions in the comments section of La Shawn’s post titled Disgruntled and Begrudging Bloggers.

“1) Do you or someone you know spend 50 percent or more of your blogging time writing (negatively) about other bloggers?”

No. I don’t nor do I know anyone who spends 50% of their time writing negative about other bloggers other than maybe the guy who gave me my first ever trackback. I will get to that in a minute. I do my share of holding others accountable like with my post on Sunday Google China Censoring or NOT?.

“2) Do you or someone you know begrudge another blogger’s “success”?”

No. I believe that there cream will rise to the top. Bloggers who are good will get return visitors from those who land on their blog(s) from searches or links.

“3) Are you or someone you know angry, perplexed, stumped — or the adjective of your choice — because certain bloggers seem to get linked frequently by the bigger bloggers, although you believe your posts are much more interesting and well-written?”

Yes I am amazed at how some bloggers get so many links, but not surprised. Although I do not believe my posts are that much more interesting or well written. I write much of my stuff during the middle of the night and quite often make mistakes. God willing, I will get better with time and write more interesting stuff.

“4) Do you believe it is wrong, impractical, wasteful, comical, useful — or the adjective of your choice — to build a reputation by trying to tear down other bloggers? “

Yes! I have a big problem with those blogs built on a foundation of negative criticism of other bloggers. I have been the target of a blog that built its foundation on tearing bloggers down. As a matter of fact I got my first ever trackback from a post that was dedicated to tearing me and my blog down. I got so excited about getting my first trackback. I did not pass on the chance to answer the critic. Here is the post titled Yee Haa..I got my first trackback”. That said, I do believe in holding each other accountable. (See answer to question 1)

What is the foundation of my blog? That really depends on which blog you are talking about. I have one blog where I have not revealed my identity. It is sort of an experiment. It is not negative and I don’t post there very often. As for the others:

The Land of Ozz: This blog is a Home of Everything Interesting to me and a few others. The numbers are growing. I get the most enjoyment from my Godcast postings of “The Living Bible”. I am working on getting some great new content for The Land of Ozz. I have a very good friend who has just received her certification as an herbalist. She has expressed interest in joining The Land of Ozz to share some great information on growing and using herbs.

Caden’s Page: My first/original blog. I started Caden’s Page on a static HTML page before I even knew that the term blog existed. Caden’s Page was created to keep family and friends updated on the events surrounding the birth of our second child because we did not and still do not have any family within 150 miles of us. Caden was diagnosed with a rare heart defect in utero that was linked to a genetic condition called Di George Syndrome. I have continued the blog due to some very positive experiences with others who have been touched by our experiences with Di George Syndrome and the dozens of medical professionals that we deal with on a regular basis. By the way, Caden will grow out of most of the things related to Di George and will lead a normal life.

Grill’n Time: It is about grilling and cooking in general. I enjoy cooking on and off of the grill. I have let this one rest for a while, but I am cranking it back up. I have a draft post sitting over there right now. It has recently been converted from Blogger to WordPress. Look for more tasty stuff to come soon on Grill’n Time.

The Tech Land of Ozz: This one is a pure technical blog. I have sort of let this one slide too. I cross post most of the stuff on The Tech Land of Ozz to this blog that you are reading in the Techie category. I may at some point just dismantle The Tech Land of Ozz and post all techie stuff in the Techie category of this blog. I am still undecided.

Summary: Blogging is a fun activity that helps me grow my web development skills and hopefully share something inspirational along the way.

OzzPoll - Which event is bigger?

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Create polls and vote for free. dPolls.com

With these two big sporting events coming up in the next few weeks I thought it might be good to put them up against each other in an OzzPoll. This poll is publicy availible on dPolls.com as well.

I am trying things a little diferent this week. I am using dPolls.com for the first time. I am not posting the poll itself in the sidebar primarily because it doesn’t fit. I have requested the ability to modify the size fo the image from dPolls.com. We will see what happens. The last option was added for Mark over at the Imagine Kitty. ;-)
